How to Care for Beaded Accessories Without Damaging the Beadwork
Share
Detailed beadwork can stay beautiful for a long time when it is handled gently and stored properly. The most important rule is to avoid aggressive scrubbing, soaking, snagging, and unnecessary moisture.
This guide covers general care for beaded moccasins, bags, wallets, caps, bolo ties, coin purses, and other embellished accessories.
1. Remove loose dust gently
Use a clean, soft, dry cloth or a very soft brush to remove surface dust. Work lightly around raised beadwork instead of rubbing back and forth with pressure.
2. Avoid soaking beadwork
Do not submerge a beaded item unless the maker specifically says it is washable. Excess water can affect thread, backing materials, leather, suede, adhesives, hardware, or interior construction even when the beads themselves are water resistant.
3. Blot small marks instead of scrubbing
If a small surface mark needs attention, start with the gentlest method possible. Use a soft cloth and blot carefully. Test any cleaning method on an inconspicuous area first, especially when leather, suede, dyed fabric, or multiple materials are involved.
4. Protect the beadwork from snags
Avoid dragging beaded surfaces against rough walls, unfinished wood, sharp jewelry, hook-and-loop fasteners, or textured materials that can catch threads. When carrying a beaded bag, be aware of zippers and hardware on nearby clothing.
5. Store items in a dry place
Keep beaded accessories away from prolonged direct sunlight, excessive humidity, and damp storage areas. Bags and wallets should be stored without heavy objects pressing against their beadwork.
6. Do not crush structured beaded bags
If a bag has a structured shape, store it upright or gently supported so the body does not collapse. Avoid placing heavy items on top of it.
7. Treat leather and suede separately from the beads
When an item combines beadwork with leather or suede, use care methods appropriate to each material rather than applying one cleaner across the entire piece. Keep leather conditioners, suede treatments, and cleaning solutions off the beadwork unless their instructions specifically support that use.
8. Handle bolo ties by the cord and slide
When adjusting a bolo tie, use the slide mechanism and cord rather than pulling on the beaded centerpiece. Store the cord loosely instead of folding it sharply.
9. Give moccasins time to dry naturally
If moccasins become lightly damp during wear, let them air dry naturally away from direct heat. Avoid radiators, hair dryers, and other concentrated heat sources that can affect leather, suede, fabric, or adhesives.
10. Check beadwork periodically
Every so often, inspect high-contact areas for a loose thread or bead. Catching a small issue early can help prevent additional strain on nearby beadwork.
